Schoharie honored with 9th consecutive School Safety award

For the ninth year in a row, the Schoharie Central School District has been honored by Utica National Insurance Group with a School Safety Excellence Award in recognition of “efforts to help keep students, staff and visitors safe.” The district received a certificate and a $500 award for advancing school-wide safety efforts.

The award was presented in March at Utica National’s 37th annual school safety seminar in Saratoga Springs, and Schoharie is one of only 136 school districts and BOCES statewide to be so honored. Schoharie again achieved the titanium, or highest level, of the safety award.

For the School Safety Excellence Award program, Utica National evaluated Schoharie’s safety practices in several areas including transportation, playground safety, bullying prevention and other areas, using specific, quantifiable surveys to measure the categories.

“The district safety team continues to impress, we have a great track record on student safety thanks to our team,” said Schoharie Central School District Superintendent David Blanchard. “The team meets each month and is highly attentive to best practices in school safety. Facilities Director Shawn Gathen led the team and ensures the highest standards are upheld throughout the district.”

Utica National Senior Vice President Brian Saville said, “Safety and health concerns continue to be a priority in our school districts. Districts that go ‘above and beyond’ to provide a safe, healthy and focused culture for learning are to be applauded, and we’re pleased to count Schoharie Central School District among them.”

Saville noted that beyond the recognition itself, an added benefit of following a safety program is the chance to pinpoint specific threats to safety. “The time to address those threats is before a loss happens, which really helps contribute to the safety culture that districts are working toward.”

Headquartered in New Hartford, N.Y., Utica National Insurance Group provides property and casualty insurance for schools, business and industry, fire departments, religious institutions and home and motor vehicle owners.
