Handcrafted with pride

What do you do when your school has new Smartboards, but needs tables for the laptops and other equipment and materials that work with them? At Schoharie Central School, the high school technology class builds them.

Justin Maleszweski's talented students handcrafted more than 70 such tables using existing classroom supplies to turn pine and plywood, hardware and screws into sanded, stained, poly-coated, functional and attractive classroom furniture.

If the district had to buy the tables, they would likely cost several hundred dollars each, for a total cost in the thousands. Maleszweski estimates the entire project came in under $1,000, and his students were able to learn and sharpen new skills throughout the process.

The tables aren't limited to holding Smartboard equipment, either. They are designed to be of a size, height and weight suitable for multiple classroom uses. And each table is stamped with the technology class's "Handcrafted by SCS Woodworking" emblem.

Carlene Benson's 1st-grade classroom is among many in Schoharie Elementary and High School now furnished with the new tables. The skilled work of the talented technology students isn't lost on their younger schoolmates. When asked who built the tables, one 1st grader happily said, "the teenagers!"

Here are a few photos of the tables from start to finish.
