Filling Empty Bowls with learning, caring, compassion

Schoharie 5th graders work on Empty Bowls

Fifth graders in Mary Bates' class at Schoharie Elementary School recently participated in a curriculum-based, community service art project that while focused on creating empty bowls actually resulted in creations filled with caring and compassion.

"During English language arts discussions and readings," Bates explained, "the students learned about how individuals and communities meet their needs. Then, as an extension of the curriculum, they painted bowls to be sold at the Empty Bowls fundraiser at SUNY Cobleskill in November.

Empty Bowls created by Schoharie 5th graders"Participants in the fundraiser purchase a bowl and are able to fill it with soup provided by local restaurants. All of the money raised is donated to food pantries in Schoharie County. The event is made possible by the Studio for Art and Craft."

Bates noted that while the usual cost to paint a bowl is $6, there was no cost to Schoharie students thanks to a collaborative effort and the generosity of Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church in Schoharie.

"The children were not only able to extend learning beyond the classroom, they also were able to help members of their own community," said Bates.

The Empty Bowls fundraiser will be held on March 12 at Cobleskill-Richmondville High School. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
