After f-i-e-r-c-e competition, Ethan VanDerwerken wins Schoharie Central School Spelling Bee for 3rd time

Ethan VanDerwerken, 3-time Spelling Bee ChampThe competition was fierce and words such as quashed, gnarled and bedraggled were spelled correctly, but Ethan VanDerwerken won his third consecutive Schoharie Central School Spelling Bee after 17 rounds by correctly spelling infuriating and coronet.

The Jan. 5 Spelling Bee featured competitors from grades 4 through 8 who qualified by scoring the highest on a written spelling test. They included:

Grade 4: Jimmy Alexander, Sean Harrington, Truman Loeper and Sophia Watson
Grade 5: Connor Dietz, Adrian Lindemann, Andrew Martin and Sophia Styles
Grade 6: Kevin Lawyer, Josh Mitchell, Ethan Smith, Gavin Thomas and Dylan Wayman-Bender
Grade 7: Erica Cater, Mia Rowe, Trinity Santoro, and Jacqueline Sullivan
Grade 8: John Blackwood, Mackenzie Heath and Ethan VanDerwerken

High School Librarian Marian Burghart served as the bee's pronouncer. Elementary Principal Andrea Polikoski and PTSO members Samantha Ballard and Vanessa Repicky served as judges for the bee, which was the school’s 20th.

"The 4th and 5th graders represented their classes well, showing that they had prepared for the bee by studying the word list," said Debra Schaffer, 4th-grade teacher.

"There was a two–way tie for third place between Adrian Lindemann and Dylan Wayman-Bender. Then the competition went 9 rounds between Gavin Thomas and Ethan VanDerwerken. Words such as quashed, gnarled and bedraggled were spelled correctly," she continued.

"Ethan ended up winning the Spelling Bee for the third consecutive year by spelling the words infuriating and coronet correctly.

"Ethan will represent Schoharie Central School at the Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 7 at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady. Last year Ethan placed 7th in the Regional Bee. We wish him luck in the competition this year."
