National Teacher Appreciation Week took on added meaning May 8 at Schoharie Central Schools, where music teacher Carrie Styles received a surprise visit and a state award.

New York State Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets Richard Ball presented Styles with the Governor’s Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award at Schoharie Elementary School, and surprised Styles, who didn't know she would be receiving the honor. Styles received a plaque and $5,000 award.

Elementary Principal Andrea Polikoski said, "Mrs. Styles is respectfully known among her colleagues and administrators as a true ambassador of educational leadership. Her nomination stemmed from her ability to hold her students to rigorous expectations and support them to achieve those high standards.

"More importantly, the things she does outside of the classroom demonstrate all of the traits that this award embodies," Polikoski said. "She taps into students' creative potential, helps them see their unique relevance as individuals, and sincerely values the whole child.

"Her passion for music and compassion for people brought a sense of joy and support to the Schoharie Elementary School community. We are all very proud of this greatly deserved recognition."

The Excellence in Teaching program "recognizes teachers in 10 regions across New York who are successfully preparing the next generation for the future and exemplifying the highest standards of teaching by working to foster creativity, instill a love of learning, and inspire independent thinking and student initiative."
