While the “We are Schoharie Fest” may be over, you can help the memory live on by baking some chocolate jumbles!
Schoharie teacher Jen McClure compiled a collection of chocolate jumbles recipes as part of the “We are Schoharie Fest,” which was a district-wide celebration held Oct. 19 to explore different cultures and experiences found within our region. One of the best ways to celebrate culture is through food!
Several staff members shared their recipes for these iconic Schoharie and Mohawk valley cookies. Chocolate jumbles, also known as jumbos, are a regional cookie variety made with chocolate, molasses and spices.
The Altamont Enterprise reported recently about jumbles: Jumbles, a local favorite, “made it to America in time to be included in Martha Washington’s Cookbook,” according to the Esperance Historical Society.
“The early cookie,” the society says, “was flavored with lemon rind or rose water and traditionally has a hole in the center. The Chocolate Jumble cookie today has a heaviness to it, with a strong molasses, chocolate, and spice taste with a hole in the center and topped with a sugar glaze icing.”
So take a look below and get ready to bake some of your own chocolate jumbles or jumbos!
