Dear Parents and Guardians:
This is to inform you that there will be no school on Thursday, May 23, Friday, May 24, and Monday, May 27. The Thursday date has been added to the Memorial Day weekend as an adjustment to the school calendar, due to contractual obligations. It is our hope that your family will enjoy the extended holiday weekend. In case you were wondering how Memorial Day became a day of reflection, I have included the information here, should you choose to share it with your family and friends.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, came about as women decorated the graves of soldiers killed during the Civil War. In May of 1868, General John Logan officially proclaimed Memorial Day, and New York was the first state to officially recognize the day in 1873. The actual official birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo, New York! The day of course recognizes those who have died in the service of their country. The actual “Moment of Remembrance” is at 3 P.M.
A sincere and heartfelt thank you is extended to our veterans and to those men and women currently serving in our Armed Forces.
Sincerely,
Davie M. Blanchard, Superintendent of Schools
