Esperance Elks Lodge #2507 Cathleen and Brendan Houlihan Continuing Education in Nursing Scholarship
2018-19
On behalf of Cathleen and Brendan Houlihan, a Continuing Education in Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to one eligible nursing student who meets all of the following criteria:
- Student must be a Schoharie County, NY resident
- Student must have a completed all of their first-year academic nursing requirements
- Student must have a GPA at or above 3.0
- Student must be entering their second or higher year of nursing school
- Student must show financial need
The following items must be submitted to Esperance Elks Lodge #2507, Attention: Sue Vazal, Scholarship Chair, 111 Main St., P.O. Box 169, Esperance, NY 12066 on or before Nov. 15, 2018 for judging and review. Review and notification will be completed by Dec. 7, 2018.
- Essay of no less than 750 and up to 1,000 maximum words describing personal attributes and accomplishments which qualify the applicant for the award. Accomplishments should include academic honors and awards, personal achievements, participation in community activities, work experience and future plans for their nursing career.
- Copy of high school transcript.
- Copy of first year (and all additional years) nursing school transcript.
- Copy of nursing school current and upcoming year class schedule.
- Financial information from prior year’s tax return (parent and/or self).
- If applicant is working, average monthly income.
Upon completion of the application review process, the applicant will be notified:
- To schedule a personal interview (the second step of the review process), or
- If they have not been chosen.
- Award decisions are made solely by Cathleen and Brendan Houlihan.
The award of $1,000 will be disbursed directly to the nursing school for educational expenses by Esperance Elks Lodge #2507.

“Hello! My name is Cathleen and my husband Brendan and I have lived in Schoharie County for the last ten years. I grew up in Schoharie County and continue to love the country. Both Brendan and I are members of Esperance Elks Lodge #2507.
“I have been a Registered Nurse for 15 years. I have my Bachelor’s in Nursing and I also practice as a Wound Care Certified RN. While going to nursing school, I was offered the opportunity to apply for grants and tuition assistance. Not all grants are easily accessible, because they are difficult to find, take time and energy, and often require intense labor that is not always rewarded, because grants are so competitive. I was fortunate to have been offered assistance and then was awarded a grant by a local philanthropic organization.
“My husband and I are offering this $1,000 scholarship to one eligible resident of our home, Schoharie County, because I was supported to achieve my dream. Nursing is such a dedicated field, and it is our hope that financial help will reduce stress and help the recipient focus on their academia.”
