We are sad to announce that Dr. Kevin Calacone will be leaving Schoharie CSD at the end of the school year.
It was announced today by La Salle Institute that Dr. Calacone was appointed as their next President. Dr. Calacone is returning to his alma mater to take the helm after spending nine years as Schoharie Jr./Sr. High School’s principal.
Dr. Calacone began his time at Schoharie Jr./Sr. High School after serving at La Salle as an English teacher, department chair, athletic coach, and Dean of Academics.
During his time at Schoharie, Dr. Calacone helped guide the school through a $19.5 million renovation project which modernized and reimagined learning spaces, common areas and athletic fields. But he said the key accomplishments the district had during his time were not related to brick and mortar. They were related to people, relationships, and learning.
“We did great work on creating a distraction-free environment with our cell phone policy. We were pioneers in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion over the past several years,” Dr. Calacone said.
He also helped the district navigate through the pandemic era, as well as through a period of time when many long-time teachers retired and new teachers were hired.
Dr. Calacone said he will miss Schoharie.
“The school is more than just a building, it’s the people and the community,” Dr. Calacone said. “Everyone has been very welcoming since I started back in 2015, and Schoharie really became a second home for me and my family.”
Superintendent David Blanchard said he is grateful for Dr. Calacone’s many years of service and wished him well when he starts at La Salle on July 1st.
“Dr. Calacone was with our school community every step of the way as we navigated both challenging times and good times,” Mr. Blanchard said. “He will be missed.”
Mr. Blanchard said Dr. Calacone personally informed the faculty and staff on Wednesday afternoon of his decision.
“We have an experienced team of school leaders with strong ties to our school and the community, as well as dedicated staff and faculty. We’ll be planning for the transition as we end the current school year, but we are in good hands,” Mr. Blanchard said.
