Schoharie Elementary students learned some new skills for school and life on PBIS Wellness Day, where they focused on the four Bs: Be respectful, Be responsible, Be safe, Be a community.
PBIS – Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports – is a school-wide program that focuses on the four Bs and more, so more time is spent on learning and enjoying school and less on discipline.
During Wellness Day on Sept. 8, students and staff worked together in classrooms and beyond. They practiced new relaxation skills, and the children learned about appropriate behavior in various school settings as well as on the bus.
Sarah Nies of Schoharie County Mental Health taught children how to cope with stress and anxiety, reading with some of the students in their classroom.
Maria Lemme led students and staff through yoga techniques that help reduce stress.
The hallway outside the nurse’s office and principal’s office was the site of lessons about good behavior in such areas.
As a research-based, overall approach rather than a set curriculum, PBIS involves the active participation of all school staff, students and their families. At Schoharie Elementary, it can be fun, too!
