An effort to help outfit Schoharie families with everything from winter coats to toothbrushes received a boost from students last year, which is leading to a better organized and equipped Schoharie Storeroom this year.
The Schoharie Storeroom is located in a small space at the Elementary School. Teacher Darcie Schmid helps manage the program, which helps connect storeroom items to students and families who need them, free of charge.
Students in Nancy McGee’s class during the last school year – who are now in Anne Donzelli’s class – helped organize and label the Schoharie Storeroom to make it easier to find specific items, Schmid said.
“They put tape labels on everything by size,” Schmid said.
In addition to labeling, the students helped organize the space so that it could hold more items, and yet be easy to manage. The Schoharie Storeroom has also received assistance from the community to expand what it offers.
“Members of the community donated money for us to get toiletries, leggings, socks and underwear,” Schmid said.
There are clothing items for infants, children and adults, as well as sneakers, shoes and boots.
In addition to the efforts with the Schoharie Storeroom, the Elementary School is also collecting school supplies that can be distributed to students and families who need them.
Obtaining items from the Schoharie Storeroom is a completely confidential process and there is no application process.
